Introduction

The LPG Industry in Tanzania is growing rapidly year by year with an average growth rate of between 10 and 15. This is attributed to the efforts of the government and the global strategic direction to move away from using environmentally polluting energy sources such as firewood and charcoal, which involve deforestation. These human activities have contributed to climate change by causing increased temperatures, hurricanes, floods, and changes in traditional seasons.

Currently, the government of Tanzania has initiated Clean Cooking Program for all institutions accommodating more than 100 inhabitants to shift to clean sources of energy, in which LPG is anticipated to contribute more than 70%.  Therefore, this rapid growth in the sector will involve massive installation of LPG infrastructures (Bulk LPG Consumer Facilities) which means to go hand in hand with equipping LPG Industry with personnel who have necessary knowledge, experience and skills that are formally recognized.

The findings show that most of the existing facilities do not comply with standards and regulatory requirements as well as the incompetence of personnel involved in installation and management of those facilities. Taking into consideration that, LPG is hazardous product that can catch fire quickly and cause deaths, destruction of properties and environment, Tanzania LPG Association (TZLPGA) found it necessary to conduct training based on Bulk LPG Consumer Facilities to boost the capacity of personnel involved in those facilities specifically Technical, Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Quality (HSSEQ) and Sales , for safe installation of LPG infrastructure in Tanzania given the safety and cost exposure of not following the appropriate standards and best practices in installation and management of such facilities.

Expected Results

After this training, participants will be able to improve their knowledge in Tanzania’s applicable LPG industry regulatory framework as well as local and international standards. Also, participants will be able to improve their knowledge, experiences and skills that will enable them to undertake LPG related operations in accordance with applicable rules, best practices and standards. It is expected that, safety awareness, regulatory and standards compliance among the targeted individuals will be increased and therefore safety will be maximized in the LPG industry supply chain.
