On June 7th, LPG Day was marked through a simple but impactful consumer awareness research activity conducted at Temeke Stereo Market. The objective was to address a common myth within the community that food cooked using LPG tastes different from food prepared using Charcoal or Firewood.

Two identical recipes were prepared using controlled and consistent ingredients to ensure fairness in comparison. Members of the public were invited to taste the food prepared using both cooking methods, and no difference in taste was observed.

In terms of cost, cooking 4 kg of rice, 2 kg of maize flour, 2 kg of meat, and 2 kg of beans using LPG consumed only 1.2 kg of gas, equivalent to TZS 4,320, while cooking the same quantities using charcoal cost approximately TZS 9,000.

The findings clearly demonstrated that cooking with LPG is more affordable, convenient, and efficient, produces significantly less pollution, and uses less water compared to cooking with charcoal.

Feedback from the audience emphasized the need for communities to embrace modern cooking solutions such as LPG, which are healthier, safer, and more environmentally friendly, supporting Tanzania’s transition toward clean cooking energy.
